New Board Members Guide

Welcome

Congratulations on your appointment.  We are very pleased to welcome you to the learning and development programme for the NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber and NHS North of England.

The programme of on-going training for Board Members starts each year in April with a programme that runs through to the following March. Since the programme started it has developed into a calendar of skills, knowledge and networking events, from small groups to larger conference style sessions.

The programme offers excellent opportunities to network and learn together with structured training events throughout the year. Both the skills and the knowledge sessions all have an element of networking as this has proved popular with delegates.

The programme of events shown on the web page includes all of the events for this year. Events being offered by other organisations, both NHS and not, are sent out to you by email as they are advertised. This gives you the best possible start to choosing what you want for your induction to your Board.

Cost of attending events

Events on the calendar are funded by the Strategic Health Authority, North of England Cluster unless otherwise stated. Places are limited and are offered on a first-come first-served basis although a spread between organisations in sought.  Events being run by outside organisations (NHS Confederation, FTN, etc) will normally charge per delegates and you should check with your trust that they will fund your place before booking.

How to get invited to events

We send out emails directly to Non Executive Directors, Chairs and other Board Members on our database. If you are not on the list and would like to receive invitations for future events please get in touch using the address at the foot of this note. Non Executive Directors and others with non-NHS email addresses are encouraged to advise us of their personal email address and mobile or home numbers so that we can market the events and contact them quickly regarding events they are booked on.

What events would be most helpful for you to attend?

The whole programme has been re-designed to offer 4 modules that have a number of related events within the theme. A brief overview is noted below and however the full programme can be viewed from the main ‘Support to Board Members’ web-page.

Module 1 Induction – Setting the scene for new members of the board giving them a sense of where they fit into their organisations and their organisation fits into the NHS.

Module 2 The Board Role: Grip and Balance – Participants will study the emerging learning from Mid Staffs, get to grips with quality governance and look into the ethical challenges and other dilemmas for boards.

Module 3 Leading Strategy and Change – This module looks at how individuals and boards develop their thinking on Strategy and Change.

Module 4 Getting a Grip on NHS Reforms – Delegates will be guided through several examples of the NHS Reforms and get the chance to debate and discuss how they are being put into practice and what problems and solutions they present.

NHS Finance Training

New NEDs may also find it beneficial to undertake the HFMA Certificate in Healthcare Finance.  For details contact John.hunter@nhs.net
