NHS Yorkshire and the Humber

NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, funded through the National Leadership Council, is delivering a number of leadership development initiatives targeted at ‘emerging leaders’ across the Region. The Emerging Leaders Steering Group, chaired by Chris Boswell (Chief Executive, Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (RDASH) ) and managed by Fiona Sullivan (Programme Manager), supports and provides additional expertise and management oversight for the work.

Emerging Leaders Network

Launched in September 2010, the network now has 150 members The new cohort was added to the network over the Summer recruitment period. The aim of the network is to enable  emerging leaders to connect, share and learn with and from each other and senior leaders, in order to accelerate their development.

All Yorkshire and the Humber NHS organizations nominated talented individuals to be part of the network that meets through a variety of mechanisms: networking events, development sessions and via an online collaboration and communication tool.

“Key benefits to my learning and development have been an improved understanding of the wider healthcare network and the confidence to challenge existing assumptions and working practises to deliver improvements to patient care”

“Good networking, I feel I am getting to know the network better.  Discussions regarding provider challenges and role of commissioner were really useful”

“Will share the learning with colleagues”

“New understanding and context on current changes/proposed legislation.”

Events focus on:

  • building a connected cohort of future senior leaders
  • supporting clinicians/non-clinicians through transition and improving delivery by building trusted working relationships with peers and senior leaders from different backgrounds (professional/cultural)
  • spreading QIPP best practice
  • supporting transition through strategy/policy updates
  • supporting diversity and inclusion through Innov8 linkages

Development sessions focus on:

  • responding to the leadership development needs of the emerging leader cohort
  • complementing what is delivered by organisations
  • accessing and delivering training/support/coaching/mentoring that is readily available from other sources
  • building sustainability of the network
