Introduction
The aim of the network is to bring together people working on the widening participation agenda from both Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and NHS employers across the region.
The network currently includes all universities in Yorkshire and the Humber as well as many NHS employers from both the acute and community sectors. Our membership also involves many further education colleges and various voluntary sector organisations. The network is funded by the SHA and our focus is on ‘ opening doors’ into higher education for health and social care professionals, with the aim of making these professions more representative of the communities they serve. We are also concerned with supporting continual personal development and learning opportunities for the whole workforce.
The intentions of the network are to:
- Provide a space to explore common interests
- Share ideas and good practice
- Develop more collaborative ways of working
Three themes have emerged from work undertaken so far
- Networking and inter-HEI collaboration and building good practice
- Closer collaboration with NHS partnerships and employers
- Working with and learning from local communities
We hold quarterly network meetings themed around a specific strand of tackling inequalities.
Members are professors, department heads, education and training staff, HR Directors, practice placement educators, lecturers, widening participation specialists, admissions tutors and student support workers - there is no one profile of network member and we are keen to set our work in the wider social context of lifelong learning.
