Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC)
Lord Darzi's NHS Next Stage Review highlights the role of the healthcare scientist within the NHS and the need to attract the very best of the UK's science students and graduates to maintain their excellent contribution for the benefit of patients and the public.
Modernising Scientifice Careers (MSC) is a key Department of Health initiative outlined in the Policy Document " The UK Way Forward ". This sets out key deliverables for the MSC programme across the UK.
The associated " England Action Plan ", also published in 2010, sets out how implementation will be taken forward in England. NHS Yorkshire and the Humber has its own Regional Implementation Plan

As a means of implementing this strategy we have introduced implementation groups for each of the science divisions. these groups meet on a bi-monthly basis.
MSC aims to ensure a future scientific workforce which can respond to the vision outlined in the Next Stage Review and contribute to the delivery of high quality healthcare by:
- Transforming education and training pathways to create a flexible, responsive, sustainable scientific and technical workforce through a comprehensive education and training strategy.
- Aligning the workforce to service needs so that work is undertaken safely and competently at the right levels and within a clear Career Framework.
- Ensuring scientific advances are adopted quickly to enhance the quality of care for people and encouraging innovation and economic regeneration.
- Achieving gains in efficiency and effectiveness while delivering high quality, value for money services.
- Improving the education and training experiences of future healthcare scientists to develop motivated individuals who want to work in the NHS.
For Strategic Health Authorities (SHA's) to support implementation of the England Action Plan, and meet the requirements of the 2010/11 MPET SLA:
" SHA's should provide detail on their plans for implementing the recommendations of the MSC programme including plans for phasing in of MSC programmes from 2010/11 with a view to full implementation in 2012/13".
