NHS Yorkshire and the Humber

ROI implementation in NHS Yorkshire and the Humber

Over 70% of NHS regional spending relates to the 144,000 staff who deliver and support the delivery of health care. NHS Yorkshire and the Humber will spend over £500 million on education and training in 2010/2011 and it is important to assess the outcomes to ensure the best return on our investment.

Given current and future demands on NHS resources, it is clear that any money spent on staff development must deliver improvements in individual performance and support service outcome goals,  greater process/system improvement and efficiencies across all services. There is a need to demonstrate perfomance impact from these investments in education using a standard efficient and effective method that provides credible results. Increasingly the NHS will have to get more for less and it is therefore important  to develop a model to demonstrate our optimal return.

The Education Commissioning Team within NHS Yorkshire and the Humber has been working on a Return On Investment (ROI) evaluation methodology in partnership with abdi ltd.

ROI Toolkit

This section has been created to allow access to a comprehensive ROI toolkit for education and training leads in trusts and universities working on SHA projects across Yorkshire and the Humber.

These documents will help support you to plan, monitor, measure and report the outcomes of projects you are involved in.

Some of the documents are templates that you can send to project partners to complete. Some of the documents are for project leads' use only - these are clearly marked.

The process used here and the templates and other documents are based on the ROI methodology and adapted for NHS Yorkshire and the Humber by abdi ltd.

Most of the education and training leads in NHS trusts in the region have a foundation level knowledge of the ROI methodology and will be familiar with the process and templates used when applying it. For those unfamiliar with the ROI methodology,  further details are available from the SHA Education Commissioning team.
