Practice placements are a key part of all health and social care professional programmes. Practice learning focuses on the services needed by patients, putting the service user/patient at the centre of the student’s learning experience.
The SHA contracts with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) (please click on the link to access a sample standard contract
sample contract (227KB) and, through the Learning and Development Agreement with placement providers, ensure the quality of learning opportunities provided for students.
Private, independent and voluntary sector organisations who are willing to provide practice placements for NHS students have the opportunity to access funded places on NHS continuing professional development programmes available across the Yorkshire and the Humber region. They will be supported by Practice Learning Facilitators and Education Providers to develop the placements and are asked to sign one of the following contracts depending on the size of the organisation:

Improving placement infrastructure
Practice Learning Facilitator (PLF) roles are in place across the region. Working across disciplines and organisations, they maintain and generate placement opportunities, develop new models of placement learning and support quality assurance processes. Improving placement information
A web-based placements evaluation/profile/audit tool has been developed to share placement information and support the quality assurance process across HEIs and provider organisations. This includes a multi disciplinary "mentor" register and placement audit information. Students can also access information about their future placements. Guidance for Supporting Students on Placement
Across the NHS Yorkshire and Humber region practice learning experiences are provided in a wide range of NHS and other organisations including NHS Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, GP Practices, Social Services, voluntary and independent sector settings. Supporting student access to placement opportunities
In order to access the range of experiences required to meet learning needs, students often move between placements to different organisations. This creates a challenge in ensuring occupational health requirements are fulfilled and to be assured of this the SHA is committed to a regional quality standard approach that meets Department of Health best practice guidance. Supporting Skills Development
Clinical Simulation Centre
The SHA has a service level agreement with the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the delivery of simulated training programmes. For more information about the centre and the range of training programmes available please visit the Montagu Simulation Centre website.
Simulated Patient Training Resource
Simulated patients are role players who effectively train healthcare professionals in communication and diagnostic skills. The SHA provides this subsidised training resource for the benefit of the region.
