From 31July 2008 it became complusory for Dental Nurses to be qualified and registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) to work with the title Dental Nurse and undertake the role without support and supervision.
Dental Nurse Qualifications
Dental nurse qualifications required for registration with the GDC are:
- National Certificate in Dental Nursing awarded by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses
- Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in oral healthcare: dental nursing
- Level 3 NVQ in Dental Nursing.
- Both NVQs awarded by City and Guilds and the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses
Unregistered Dental Nurses
Unregistered Dental Nurses should only be working in a practice in the following circumstances:
- allocation of a named registrant as their supervisor who will take responsibility for and be accountable for their work
- The nurse should be working towards or enrolled on a programme that will lead to a registerable qulaifiaction with the GDC
Continuing Professsional Development (CPD) Requirements
Once registered with the GDC at least 150 hours of CPD must be undertaken over a 5 year period, a minium of 50 hours must be verifiable. The GDC recommend that this includes legal and ethical issues, and complaints handling. Personal Development Plans are recommended.
