Within Yorkshire and the Humber, only 40% of men and 26% of women take enough physical exercise to benefit their health. Our region has the fourth lowest rate of fruit and vegetable consumption in the country, with only 23% of adults and 15% of children eating five portions or more a day.
Obesity is the second biggest preventable cause of ill health and death after smoking. Obesity in women (at 23.8%) is the second highest across all regions. By 2050 in Yorkshire and the Humber nearly 70% of us could be obese, compared with 60% nationally.
Helping people to understand the importance of maintaining a healthy weight is a key priority. We work with primary care trusts to promote the commissioning of effective weight management services and bariatric surgery.
Alongside this, much of our work focuses on influencing the development of food, transport, recreation and planning policies, to support the creation of an environment that makes it easier for people to choose to eat healthily and be physically active.
