What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a collection of lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease. People with COPD have trouble breathing in and out. This is referred to as airflow obstruction.

Breathing difficulties are caused by long-term damage to the lungs, usually because of smoking.

National strategy

The Department of Health's national COPD strategy promises to change the way we work so we can be better at preventing and treating this condition.

The national strategy is a golden opportunity to improve respiratory care across the Yorkshire and Humber region, even in these financially difficult times.

The national strategy aims to:

  • advise how local communities can prevent people getting COPD
  • understand the risks of having poor lung health
  • secure improvements to the diagnosis of and care of people with the disease
  • reduce health inequalities

The strategy aims to support people with COPD and their carers by offering practical advice and education on managing their disease. The aim is that everyone with COPD receives high-quality and effective health and social care services from the right person, at the right time, in the right place, at the same time ensuring that this care provides good value for money for taxpayers.

The Yorkshire and the Humber team are committed to improving the experience of those with COPD and asthma, including those who have yet to have their condition diagnosed, by ensuring a high standard of care is available across the whole region.

In order to do this it is important we get accurate information on what we're currently doing, where things are being done well and where there are weaknesses. Regional events have shown the innovative approaches that some local teams have adopted and we need to learn from these and support wider adoption.

The Lung Improvement Project will also play an important part in this. http://www.improvement.nhs.uk/lung/

Workstreams

Objective 1:

The two over-arching objectives for the first part of the strategy are:

  • Prevention – so that people make healthy choices about their life and reduce their chances of getting lung disease
  • Supporting early identification - so that people recognise the symptoms of lung disease and seek advice from healthcare professionals

Objective 2:

  • Good quality early diagnosis - so that people get an accurate diagnosis and there is clear differentiation of COPD from asthma and other diagnoses

Objective 3:

  • High quality care and support following diagnosis - by developing an organised, proactive, multidisciplinary approach to the management of COPD including both chronic and acute care

Objective 4:

  • Improving access to end of life care services - by improving access to high-quality care for both people with severe COPD and those needing end of life care, wherever they choose to receive it
