In 2008 Healthy Ambitions was launched which was the Y&H response to the Next Stage Review. It highlighted stroke as a major priority for improvement:
- Evidence of unacceptable variation across the region
- Spending more on stroke but getting worse outcomes than other countries
- 600 lives per year could be saved in Y&H
- 80% of strokes could be prevented by effective TIA treatment
All PCTs agreed collective approach needed at Y&H level to tackle stroke in addition to local strategic plans which addressed Healthy Ambitions recommendations. A steering group chaired by Y&H Acute Clinical Lead was subsequently set up to produce a region wide Stroke Assurance Framework
